For the first time in over two years, UFC returns to Arizona and welcomes fans back at full capacity with a pair of highly anticipated championship rematches. Headlining the event will be middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, as he looks to fend off No. 3 ranked contender Marvin Vettori. In the co-main event, flyweight champion Deiveson Figueiredo and No. 1 contender Brandon Moreno seek to settle the score following their thrilling majority draw in December. Also, for the first time in UFC history, a non-title co-main event will be five rounds as No. 3 ranked welterweight contender Leon Edwards faces off with Nate Diaz.

UFC 263: ADESANYA vs. VETTORI 2 will take place Saturday, June 12 at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz. All bouts will be streamed on ESPN+ in English and Spanish. The early prelims begin at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT on ESPN+ and UFC Fight Pass. The prelims will be distributed on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. The UFC 263 main card will stream exclusively on ESPN+ Pay-Per-View starting at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

UFC middleweight champion Adesanya (20-1, fighting out of Auckland, New Zealand) returns to his natural weight class looking to successfully defend his title for the third time. Since joining the UFC roster in 2018, Adesanya has developed into one of the top ranked pound-for-pound fighters in the world, a distinction he earned with impressive victories over Paulo Costa, Robert Whittaker and Anderson Silva. He now intends improve on his 2018 win over Vettori and continue his quest to become the greatest middleweight in UFC history.

Vettori (17-4-1, fighting out of Huntington Beach, Calif. by way of Mezzocorona, Italy) plans to make the most of his first UFC title shot by becoming the first middleweight to defeat Adesanya. Undefeated since his split decision loss to the current middleweight champion in 2018, Vettori climbed through the ranks with dominant wins over Karl Roberson, Jack Hermansson and Kevin Holland. He now seeks to show off his evolution as a fighter and secure the biggest win of his career.

UFC flyweight champion Figueiredo (20-1-1, fighting out of Condor Belem, Para, Brazil) returns to action aiming to make a statement and show that he is the best 125-pounder in the world. A renowned finisher, he is currently tied for the most stoppages in UFC flyweight history with seven, a number he accumulated with victories over Alex Perez, Joseph Benavidez (twice) and Tim Elliott. Figueiredo now looks to continue his title reign with a record-breaking performance.

Top ranked Moreno (18-5-2, fighting out of Tijuana, Mexico) has his sights set on shocking the world in his second chance at UFC gold. A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, Moreno secured his first shot at Figueiredo following notable wins over contenders Kai Kara-France, Jussier Formiga and Brandon Royval. He now hopes to leave no doubt that he is the true flyweight champion and begin building his own legacy at the top of the 125-pound ladder.

Perennial top contender Edwards (18-3, 1 NC, fighting out of Birmingham, England) makes a quick return to the Octagon looking to restart his momentum after a no contest with Belal Muhammad earlier this month. The owner of the second-longest active unbeaten streak in the stacked welterweight division, Edwards secured his spot in the top five with victories over Albert Tumenov, Vicente Luque, Gunnar Nelson and former champion Rafael Dos Anjos. He now looks to deliver his best performance yet in the biggest opportunity of his career against Diaz.

Fan favorite Diaz (21-12, fighting out of Stockton, Calif.) is set to make his first appearance in the Octagon in almost two years. A member of the UFC roster since winning the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2007, Diaz rocketed to superstardom following his massive upset victory over Conor McGregor in 2016. He has also secured impressive wins over Anthony Pettis, Gray Maynard and Donald Cerrone. Diaz now looks to remind fans that he is still one of the best in the world and immediately inject himself into the welterweight title conversation.

Collier and Felipe kept a fast pace on the feet in the opening round, each having their positive moments during the exchanges, with Collier edging things as he marked up his foe’s face and was the busier of the two with not only punches, but kicks to the leg.

The pace dipped in the second as Collier tired, and Felipe took advantage and surged into the lead, and while the third was close, Felipe was the fresher fighter and he showed it en route to the decision victory.

Official result: Carlos Felipe def. Jake Collier via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29) | Official Scorecards

Ziam’s slick and patient striking attack allowed him to control the first round completely, and there was more of the same in the second as the Frenchman was content to pick and peck at Vendramini as he tossed aside the Brazilian’s takedown attempts. But in the third, Vendramini finally found daylight when he rocked Ziam and finally got him to the mat. Once there, Vendramini looked for the finish by any means necessary. With 1:40 left, Ziam got back to his feet and went into a defensive mode as he eluded the rushes of his foe until the final horn.

Chase Hooper vs Steven Peterson

Steven Peterson used all his veteran tricks to beat featherweight phenom Chase Hooper, earning himself a unanimous decision victory.

Scores were 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 for Peterson, now 19-9. Hooper falls to 10-2-1.

Peterson went after Hooper from the start, with an early trip to the canvas resulting in some effective ground-and-pound. Subsequent grappling exchanges went better for Hooper, but Peterson made sure to punish him on the way up. With under two minutes left, Hooper went after Peterson’s leg for a spell, but after getting out of danger, the Texan landed some more hard shots.

Hooper made his move in the final minute, but Peterson continued to defend well until the horn.

Davis, remaining patient, began targeting Kianzad’s lead leg in the second stanza, and “Banzai” was clearly affected by the steady stream of calf kicks, prompting the Canadian to up her punching work rate as the round progressed, bloodying her foe in the process.

The third round was the closest of the fight, with both combatants getting in their share of shots before the bout went to the judges.

Movsar Evloev vs Hakeem Dawodu

In a clash of Top 15 featherweights, Movsar Evloev outlasted Hakeem Dawodu via unanimous decision.

Scores were 29-27 across the board for the No.14-ranked Evloev. The No.15-ranked Dawodu falls to 12-2-1.

Evloev got the fight to the mat in the second minute, and though Dawodu kept returning to his feet, the Russian kept grounding him. By the midway point, Evloev had his foe’s back and he began working for a choke. He didn’t get it, but he was able to bank a dominant round.

It was back to the same position on the mat early in round two, and Evloev’s swarming and punishing style allowed him to keep dominating the action.

Dawodu was finally able to get his offense his gear in the third round, as he kept the fight standing, and with a little over a minute left, he stung the Russian with a pair of lefts. But Evloev responded with a takedown, allowing him to run out the clock and pick up the victory.

Lauren Murphy vs Joanne Calderwood

Lauren Murphy made her case for a shot at the flyweight crown with a three-round split decision over Joanne Calderwood that extended her current winning streak to five.

Scores were 29-28 twice and 28-29 for the No.3-ranked Murphy, now 15-4. The No.6-ranked Calderwood falls to 15-6.

The first round was brutally tough to call, as the Top 10 flyweights went back and forth on the feet in the opening five minutes, Murphy landing some hard shots while Calderwood kept the volume up and landed some spinning techniques.

Murphy changed the location of the fight in the second stanza as she took Calderwood to the mat and pinned her there as she landed hard punches. Calderwood wasn’t ever in serious danger, but she did lose the round big, forcing her to have to take the third round to tighten things up, and the Scotland native did just that, only to fall short of victory on two of the three judges’ scorecards.

Eryk Anders vs Darren Stewart

In a light heavyweight rematch of their March no contest, Eryk Anders won a three-round unanimous decision over Darren Stewart.

Scores were 29-28, 29-27, 29-27 for Anders, now 14-5, 1 NC. Stewart falls to 12-7, 2 NC.

The fans were restless in the first round as the two fighters methodically looked to get their offenses in gear, and in a largely tactical frame, a takedown by Stewart with 42 seconds left may have been the difference on the scorecards.

In the second, the fight continued to be fought mainly in the clinch, with neither fighter doing much in terms of consistent scoring at close range, but Anders’ likely edging it.

Stewart took Anders to the mat in the first minute of round three, but Anders reversed position and quickly settled into half-guard. On the canvas, Anders finally began to dominate, as he kept Stewart pinned as he let loose with ground strikes. Stewart tried to fire back late to avoid a stoppage, and he did that, sending the fight to the scorecards.

Drew Dober vs Brad Riddell

New Zealand’s Brad Riddell scored the biggest win of his career, winning an exciting three-round unanimous decision over lightweight contender Drew Dober.

Scores were 29-28 across the board for Riddell, now 10-1. The No.13-ranked Dober falls to 23-11, 1 NC

There was no feeling-out process here, as Dober and Riddell were throwing thunder from the start. A minute in, Dober staggered Riddell, forcing the New Zealander to go all-in in search of a takedown. He got it briefly, but Dober rose to his feet quickly. The time grappling did allow Riddell to clear his head, and when they resumed striking, “Quake” got in some solid shots before he got rocked again, albeit not as badly as earlier. And getting the last big shots in was Riddell, who landed three right hands before the horn.

Neither fighter backed off as round two began, and they kept taking turns rocking each other before a takedown by Dober a minute in. Riddell reversed and grappled from the dominant position and soon the two separated before a takedown by the Auckland product. With under two minutes to go, the fighters were standing and swinging, Riddell taking a slight edge.

Riddell’s right hand was on target in the third round, forcing Dober to seek a takedown. He didn’t get it, but he was able to buy the time to reset his offense. The two were then cagey around each other, but Riddell finished strong, rocking Dober again and slamming him to the mat just before the final horn.

Paul Craig vs Jamahal Hill

In the main card opener, Paul Craig removed Jamahal Hill from the ranks of the unbeaten with a devastating first-round TKO in a meeting of light heavyweight contenders.

A minute into the fight, Craig clinched with Hill and pulled guard. Craig nearly locked up Hill’s arm, and while the Grand Rapids product escaped initially, Craig stuck with it and after getting an armbar sunk in, Hill was clearly injured. Hill hung tough, but the die was cast, with referee Al Guinee stopping the bout at the 1:59 mark.

The 43-year-old Maia was going after the takedown consistently in the first round, but Muhammad’s defense was solid throughout, as he only allowed one trip to the mat. In the second, the gap widened, as Maia appeared to lose steam on his takedowns while Muhammad upped his work rate with his strikes. Nothing changed in the third round, with Muhammad’s striking solid throughout as he continued to avoid Maia’s takedown attempts and lock up a win.

Leon Edwards vs Nate Diaz

No.3-ranked welterweight contender Leon Edwards survived a late scare to win a clear-cut unanimous decision over Nate Diaz in the first non-title, non-main event five-rounder in UFC history.

Scores were 49-46 across the board for Edwards, now 19-3, 1 NC. Diaz falls to 21-13.

Edwards was cool, calm and collected in the opening round as Diaz tried to use gamesmanship to goad the Brit into a brawl. Edwards wasn’t having it; instead, he landed several hard leg kicks, scored a takedown and got in some ground strikes to wrap up a solid round of work.

Remaining disciplined in his attack, Edwards kept piling up the points in round two as he kept drilling Diaz’ leg and scored another takedown. Diaz did get busier and briefly looked for a leg lock on the mat, but it was still an Edwards round punctuated by a spinning elbow before the horn sounded.

Leon Edwards Post-Fight Interview | UFC 263
/

Diaz appeared to be surging early in the third round, but Edwards’ third takedown was followed by strikes that bloodied the Stockton native. Diaz, not surprisingly, was undeterred by the blood, but Edwards pushed the action, drilling Diaz with another elbow late in the frame.

Edwards landed the biggest shot of the fight a minute into round four, a left hand that even drew an acknowledgement from Diaz, who went right back into the pocket, only to eat another left and then got tripped to the mat. Just when it looked like Diaz was running out of options, he got some good shots in with a little over 90 seconds to go, but he wasn’t following up, leaving him with just five minutes to turn the fight around.

The final round opened with a 1-2 and a trip by Edwards, and time began ticking away on Diaz, who appeared to jar “Rocky” briefly before clinching with him against the fence. Unable to get anything done there, Diaz and Edwards separated, and with a minute left, Diaz finally rocked his opponent with a flush left hand and had him on wobbly legs. Diaz went on the attack in the closing seconds, but despite eating more shots, a couple well-timed clinches kept Edwards upright until the fight ended.

Co-Main Event: Deiveson Figueiredo vs Brandon Moreno

In a rematch of a December 2020 classic that ended in a draw, Brandon Moreno made history on Saturday night with a third-round submission of Deiveson Figueiredo that earned him the world flyweight title and saw him become the first Mexico native to win a UFC title.

“I worked so hard for this,” said the 27-year-old Tijuana native.

The first round was all Moreno, whose busy and confident attack seemed to catch Figueiredo off-guard. And with under two minutes left, the suddenly aggressive Figueiredo who got dropped by a Moreno jab. Moreno looked for the finish, but the champion cleared his head and got back to his feet to end the round on his feet.

After eating another stiff jab to start the second frame, Figueiredo scored a takedown and began to work on the mat. But thanks to some good defense, Moreno escaped and returned to his feet, where he locked up with the Brazilian and then scored his own takedown, keeping Figueiredo grounded for the rest of the round.

The striking exchanges heated up in the third, but in the second minute, Moreno surprised Figueiredo with a takedown and then took the champion’s back as he looked for a rear naked choke. And with over three minutes left, that wasn’t a good thing for Figueiredo, who was forced to tap out to the choke at 2:26 of round three.

With the win, Moreno moves to 19-5-2. Figueiredo falls to 20-2-1.

Main Event: Israel Adesanya vs Marvin Vettori

UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya successfully defended his title for the third time in the main event of UFC 263 with a shutout unanimous decision over Marvin Vettori in a rematch of an April 2018 bout also won by “The Last Stylebender.”

All three judges saw it 50-45 for Adesanya, now 21-1. The No.3-ranked Vettori falls to 17-5-1.

Adesanya kept Vettori at bay with low kicks as the bout commenced, but in the second minute, the challenger caught one of the kicks and put the champion on his back. Adesanya worked his way upright, and after a short time in the clinch, he was able to separate himself. A flurry of punches followed by Vettori, but the champ slipped most of them. In the final minute, Adesanya landed some solid shots while dodging incoming fire.

Easily dodging the majority of Vettori’s punches, Adesanya made the challenger pay for his misses, and his takedown defense was equally effective in round two as he put another frame in the books.

Vettori got a takedown to begin the third round and he took Adesanya’s back briefly before the New Zealander reversed position. A scramble followed, with Vettori taking an inadvertent eye poke as the two rose. When the action resumed, Adesanya’s leg kicks were landing with thudding efficiency, one even putting the Italian on the deck briefly in the closing minute. A low kick by Adesanya may have been the most telling of the round, though, halting the action momentarily just before the horn.

Another Vettori takedown took place in the second minute of the fourth frame, but Adesanya reversed position immediately and go back to his feet, where he continued to mix up his attacks as Vettori followed him ineffectively.

There would be no miracle comeback from Vettori, who just wasn’t able to implement his game plan or hurt the champion enough to turn things around.
