UFC 267: Blachowicz vs Teixeira Main Card

Main Event: Jan Blachowicz vs Glover Teixeira

In the main event of UFC 267 in Abu Dhabi, Glover Teixeira became the second oldest champion in UFC history at 42 years old, as he submitted Jan Blachowicz in the second round to win the world light heavyweight title.

“20 years baby,” said Teixeira. “I have no words to describe this.”

He’s never needed them, as the Brazilian has always let his fighting do the talking. And while he came up short in a 2014 title fight against Jon Jones, more than seven years later, Teixeira got his second shot and made the most of it.

Teixeira got a takedown in the opening minute and went to work. Blachowicz defended well, getting in an occasional strike as he attempted to tie his foe up and force a restart, but Teixeria stayed busy, making the champion as uncomfortable as possible in the process.

Blachowicz turned away Teixeira’s first takedown attempt of round two and followed up with crisp punches at range. In the second minute, the two locked up briefly against the fence before separating, and at range, Blachowicz’ takedown defense remained solid. Teixeira went back to his striking, rattling Blachowicz with a left hook before eating some shots in return. At the midway point, though, Teixeira got the fight to mat, and after taking Blachowicz’ back, he sunk in the rear naked choke that forced Blachowicz to tap out at 3:02 of the second round.

With the win, Teixeira moves to 33-7. Blachowicz falls to 28-9.

The oldest champion in UFC history was 45-year-old Randy Couture.

Official result – Glover Teixeira def Jan Blachowicz via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:02 of round two

Co-main Event: Petr Yan vs Cory Sandhagen

In a compelling five-rounder, Petr Yan regained a portion of the UFC bantamweight crown he lost via disqualification to Aljamain Sterling by winning a unanimous decision over Cory Sandhagen to take the interim 135-pound belt in the UFC 267 co-main event.

Scores were 49-46 across the board for Yan, now 16-2. The No.3-ranked Sandhagen falls to 14-4.

Sandhagen had a good first round as he mixed up his striking attacks and kept a busy pace. Yan got in some shots of his own, but wasn’t able to break the Coloradan’s rhythm.

Petr Yan Post-Fight Interview | UFC 267
/

Yan’s kicks were putting money in the bank for the Russian, but the same could be said for Sandhagen’s body shots as round two got underway. And as Yan settled into the fight, the standup exchanges got a lot more heated, with each fighter having their positive moments.

There was no let-up to the high-level action in the third, with Sandhagen keeping the pace high while Yan was more interested in picking his spots to attack. But with a little over a minute to go, Yan dropped Sandhagen with the biggest strikes of the fight, a spinning right backfist followed by a left hand that broke open the round. Sandhagen survived the ensuing onslaught, but momentum had swung to Yan’s side.

Sandhagen got a takedown midway through the fourth frame, and though Yan got up quickly, he now had something new to think about. When standing, Yan pressured his opponent and landed flush shots as the crowd roared. Sandhagen wasn’t backing down, but he was looking for other offensive options, and a subsequent takedown attempt came up empty, with Yan punishing his foe as they stood.

Still fresh in the final round, Sandhagen used lateral movement to hold Yan at bay, all the while throwing enough shots to keep “No Mercy” honest. With under two minutes to go, Yan landed a flush kick to the head that Sandhagen shook off, but it was a major scoring blow in a close round that the Coloradan tried to secure late before a last-second barrage of hard shots by Yan.

Official result – Petr Yan def. Cory Sandhagen via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-36, 49-46)

“Tybur” had a much better round in the second, and though he wasn’t able to get Volkov to the canvas, his activity level and pressure tired the Russian considerably leading into the last frame.

It was Volkov who surged in the final round, though, as he used crisp striking and solid grappling offense and defense to take the final five minutes and the fight.

        Magomed Ankalaev vs Volkan Oezdemir

In the main card opener, Magomed Ankalaev continued to roll as he extended his winning streak to seven with a three-round unanimous decision over Volkan Oezdemir.

Scores were 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 for the No.7-ranked Ankalaev, now 16-1. The No.8-ranked Oezdemir falls to 17-6.

Oezdemir’s striking was sharp as the bout began, but a missed flying knee prompted Ankalaev to lock up with his foe. Oezedmir didn’t stay in his opponent’s grip long, and he got back to picking his shots from a distance. A straight left by Ankalaev floored Oezdemir just before the three-minute mark, earning the Russian some early respect, and some more flush shots had the same effect late.

Ankalaev continued fighting a patient fight, with his clean shots opening up a nasty cut over Oezdemir’s left eye. And while the Swiss fighter marked up Ankalaev’s leg with his kicks, when Oezdemir landed hard shots upstairs, the Dagestan product smoothly went to his grappling game.

There was no change to the tenor of the fight in the third, with Ankalaev patient and Oezdemir not pushing him out of his comfort zone. End result? Another win for Ankalaev.

Jandiroba got the first takedown of the fight 90 seconds in, but Ribas wasn’t bothered, as she attempted a triangle choke that Jandiroba survived. “Carcara” proceeded to push Ribas to the fence and start working her ground-and-pound attack, but referee Dan Movahedi oddly restarted the action in the final minute. Jandiroba didn’t get rattled, though, as she finished the frame with a knockdown.

Ribas started the second with a good right hand, and she took the fight to Jandiroba throughout the five-minute session, forcing her compatriot into counterstriking mode while evening the score heading into the final frame.

Keeping the pressure on, Ribas hurt Jandiroba with a kick just past the midway point of the third round, and while “Carcara” cleared her head and kept fighting, it was completely Ribas’ fight over the last two rounds, and it showed on the final judges’ tallies.

            Zubaira Tukhugov Post-Fight Interview | UFC 267
            /

The first round was fought at a fast pace, Tukhugov controlling matters much of the way thanks to his busy attack and pressure, but late in the stanza, a spinning back elbow by Ramos evened the score and put Tukhugov on the defensive for the rest of a round that saw both men go back to their corners wearing the damage from the previous five minutes on their face.

Tukhugov added to his early lead in round two, outstriking his foe and even adding a late takedown to his scorecard. And while both fighters continued to lift their work rate in the final frame, Ramos was unable to break Tukhugov, who picked up his first win since February 2020.

              Albert Duraev vs Roman Kopylov

Recent Dana White’s Contender Series contract winner Albert Duraev won his UFC debut, extending his current winning streak to 10 with a unanimous decision victory over Roman Kopylov.

Scores were 30-27, 29-27 and 29-27 for Duraev, now 15-3. Kopylov falls to 8-2.

The 185-prospects kept it standing in the opening frame, each having their moments, but Duraev was the busier of the two.

A left hand by Kopylov scored a flash knockdown as the second round began, forcing Duraev to go all-in for a takedown. Kopylov grabbed the fence to avoid a trip to the mat, but after a stern warning and restart from referee Jason Herzog, Duraev got his takedown and smoothly moved into the mount. There, the strikes rained down, and while Kopylov tried to fire back as he tried to escape, Duraev didn’t let up with his assault, bloodying his opponent and nearly submitting him with a choke before the horn intervened.

Both fighters were bruised up for round three, but they kept battling, with Kopylov even scoring a takedown of his own late in the frame before the bout ended.

Official result – Albert Duraev def. Roman Kopylov via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-27, 29-27)

Elizeu dos Santos vs Benoit Saint Denis

A unanimous decision win by Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos over newcomer Benoit Saint Denis was unfortunately overshadowed by poor officiating in the welterweight bout, but the Brazilian was dominant in victory.

Scores were 29-26 across the board for Zaleski dos Santos, now 23-7. Saint Denis falls to 8-1, 1 NC

The game plans were clear in the opening round, Saint Denis seeking a takedown while Zaleski dos Santos wanted to keep it standing. Outside of an early takedown by the Frenchman, it was “Capoeira” who won that battle, mainly using his kicks to keep a step ahead of his opponent.

              /

The Brazilian hurt Saint Denis early in round two and he put the heat on, and while most referees would have stopped the fight and rescued the game newcomer, referee Vyacheslav Kiselev allowed the bout to go on and Saint Denis made it out of the round.

Battered and bloodied, Saint Denis caught an accidental eye poke that Kiselev didn’t believe warranted a visit from the Octagonside physician, and he got hurt again by Dos Santos, but he never stopped fighting, even though he wasn’t done any favors by the referee or his corner. Dos Santos even lost a point without a warning for an inadvertent low blow, but it ultimately didn’t matter when it came to the final verdict.

                Makwan Amirkhani vs Lerone Murphy

Unbeaten featherweight Lerone Murphy kept that “0” in his loss column with a second-round knockout of Makwan Amirkhani.

Amirkhani put the fight on the mat in the opening minute and proceeded to keep it there for the majority of the first round. Even when Murphy was able to rise, Amirkhani wouldn’t let go of him, capping off a solid round.

But as soon as the second stanza began, Murphy was not interested in another grappling match, and as Amirkhani shot for the takedown, he caught “Mr. Finland” with a flush knee, and that was it, with referee Marc Goddard stepping in after one follow-up shot to halt the fight at :14 of round two.

                Hu Yaozong vs Andre Petroski

In middleweight action, Andre Petroski scored his second consecutive UFC finish, submitting Hu Yaozong in the third round.

Petroski landed a couple good punches upstairs in the opening stages of the fight, and after Hu stumbled to the mat, the Philadelphian nearly finished matters with a guillotine choke. Hu waited the choke out, but Petroski remained in command, both on the mat and the feet. By the end of the round, Hu had weathered the storm, and Petroski looked to be tiring.

Petroski apparently got his second wind in round two, as he completely controlled the fight on the mat, leaving Hu in a deep hole on the scorecards heading into the final frame. But the TUF 29 alum wasn’t going to let him back into the fight, and after another dominant effort, he sunk in the head and arm choke that forced a tap out at 4:46 of round three.

                Tagir Ulanbekov vs Allan Nascimento

In the flyweight opener, Tagir Ulanbekov outpointed Allan Nascimento via split decision.

Scores were 29-28 twice and 28-29 for Ulanbekov, now 14-1. Nascimento falls to 17-6.

After taking some shots early from Nascimento, Ulanbekov put the fight on the mat in the second minute, but the Brazilian fought well there, sweeping his way out of trouble before Ulanbekov sunk in a tight guillotine choke. Nascimento was able to fight his way free, though, and the back-and-forth scrap continued.

As the fight went back to the mat in the second, Nascimento sought out a kimura, but Ulanbekov got loose and remained in the top position. He wasn’t able to do much with the advantage, as Nascimento continued to look for submissions.

The third was more of the same, with Ulanbekov controlling position while Nascimento stayed busy from his back, and that control was enough for the Russian to pick up the win on two of the three judges’ scorecards.

Official result – Tagir Ulanbekov def. Allan Nascimento via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-29)
