UFC Fight Night: Vieira vs Tate Main Card

Main Event: Ketlen Vieira vs Miesha Tate

Brazil’s Ketlen Vieira put a dent in the comeback plans of Miesha Tate, as she defeated the former world bantamweight champion via five-round unanimous decision in the UFC Fight Night main event.

Scores were 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46 for the No.7-ranked Vieira, now 12-2. The No.8-ranked Tate falls to 19-8.

The first round was largely tactical, the two getting acclimated to the Octagon and each other. With a little over a minute left, Tate used a hard right hand to get into the clinch, and that sequence might have been the deciding factor in scoring the opening frame.

Tate’s right hand scored effectively in the second, prompting Vieira to throw her own in response, and this seemed to be the launching point for some more activity on the feet for both fighters, with Tate holding the edge thanks to a hard kick up the middle and a follow-up 1-2. But Vieira did surge down the stretch with right hands that hit the mark.

/

An inadvertent eye poke by Tate brought a halt to the proceedings early in round three, but after getting cleared by the Octagonside physician, the bout continued, Tate trying to close the distance while Vieira kept her at bay with straight punches from long range and defended a Tate takedown.

Tate went back to her grappling attack in round four, and while she didn’t get the fight to the mat, she stayed busy in the clinch and added some points at close range before the two broke and traded hard shots before another clinch, this one punctuated by body punches by Vieira.

With the fight close and possibly up for grabs, it was Tate pushing the pace early in the fifth while Vieira stuck to her guns with a patient attack that was still scoring points and that bloodied Tate’s nose and closed her left eye down the stretch.

Official result – Ketlen Vieira def. Miesha Tate via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) | Official Scorecards

Co-Main Event: Michael Chiesa vs Sean Brady

Unbeaten Sean Brady scored the biggest win of his career in the UFC Fight Night co-main event, as he defeated Michael Chiesa via unanimous decision in a meeting of welterweight contenders.

Scores were 29-28 across the board for the No.14-ranked Brady, now 15-0. The No.6-ranked Chiesa falls to 18-6.

Brady caught a couple inadvertent eye pokes in the first two minutes of the opening round, drawing a brief break both times, but it was the Philadelphian who had the first major score of the fight thanks to a takedown that Chiesa rose quickly from. Brady kept at it and got another takedown, but as they rose again, Brady emerged with a bloody nose courtesy of a left cross from the former Ultimate Fighter winner.

Chiesa’s striking looked sharp in the first half of round two, and quick left hands kept Brady at bay until the Philly fighter got the action to the mat and then took his foe’s back, keeping the bout there until the horn.

Seemingly down on the cards, Chiesa went after the finish to start the third and final round, but Brady weathered the storm and once again put the fight on the mat while taking the back of “Maverick.” With less than a minute to go, Chiesa found his way to his feet and did his best to turn things around, but even with a late takedown and a furious ground-and-pound assault, he ran out of time.

The No.10-ranked Santos moves to 19-1 with the win. The No.5-ranked Wood falls to 15-7.

Yahya got the fight to the mat in the second minute and he wasn’t able to let his grip of Kang go, even as the Busan product worked his way back to his feet. With three minutes to go, Kang got free and worked a steady jab, mixing in right hands, with one of them dropping the Brazilian with under two minutes to go. Yahya rose and it was back to work for Kang, whose striking looked sharp.

A tactical error by Kang allowed Yahya to get the fight to the mat early in round two, and the Brazilian grappling master kept it there for the rest of the frame, evening the score with his foe. In the third, it was more of the same, as Yahya controlled matters on the canvas en route to the decision victory.

Davey Grant vs Adrian Yanez

Rising bantamweight star Adrian Yanez continued to impress as he pounded out a three-round split decision over Davey Grant.

Scores were 29-28, 29-28 and 27-30 for Yanez, now 15-3. Grant falls to 13-6.

Grant opened with a spinning kick that Yanez eluded, but he kept the kicks coming as he attempted to keep Yanez from getting into a rhythm. In the second minute, though, Yanez began finding that rhythm with his hands, calmly catching Grant with combinations to the head and body. Grant stayed busy, but got caught with a left and a right upstairs, each of which made the Brit stumble briefly.

After a brief stop for Yanez to recover from an inadvertent eye poke early in round two, Grant looked for a takedown for the first time but came up empty. That didn’t deter the bloodied Grant, who was throwing hard with his punches, kicks and the occasional spinning technique. Through it all, Yanez wasn’t bothered, and he continued to calmly pick his shots against an opponent who was anything but calm in his attack.

The exchanges got more heated in the third, both bantamweights intent on making an impression in the final frame, and early on, it was Grant making that impression. Midway through the round, Yanez got back on track behind a stiff jab and follow-up right hands, keeping it simple and effective as the bout went through its final stages.

Lutz came out fast for round two, only to get grounded once more. On the mat, Sabatini continued to dominate, nearly catching his opponent in a guillotine choke before taking his back and working for a rear naked choke again. Again, Lutz hung tough, but now he needed a finish in the third round to get the win, and Sabatini wasn’t about to let that happen as he made it three straight in the Octagon.

The Mexico native wasted no time getting Lookboonmee to the mat to open round two, and while Lookboonmee didn’t stay grounded long, Godinez stayed locked on as they stood until the pair broke apart midway through the round. Lookboonmee did score with a subsequent knee, but that led to another takedown by Godinez, wrapping up a solid effort.

After an early leg lock attempt by Godinez early in round three, Lookboonmee came back as she outworked her foe with her strikes, but it was another takedown by Godinez that put her back ahead as the seconds ticked away.

Pinheiro used her strikes to set up a throw to the mat just before the midway point of the opening frame, and after getting free from a couple choke attempts, Hughes got back to her feet but was unable to get the points back from her foe.

Hughes had a better second round, but late in the stanza, the Brazilian scored a knockdown and flurried on the mat, perhaps stealing the middle five minutes. And while Hughes performed well in the third as well, it wasn’t enough to turn the fight in her favor, as Pinheiro scored her second UFC win.
